Why We Pray – June 27

  • Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. (Luke 18:1)

Here we see Jesus instructing the disciples to always pray; we also see Paul command the church in Thessalonica to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5). Yet you may wonder why you need to talk to God about your needs since “your Father knows what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him” (Matthew 6:8).

It is part of God’s grand scheme that we have been given the privilege to cooperate with God in prayer. Prayer is not overcoming God’s reluctance; it is laying hold of His willingness. Ephesians 6:18 tells us to always “pray in the Spirit.” As the Holy Spirit places thoughts on your heart, you are to submit those thoughts to God in prayer. In doing so, you are part of a closed circuit that begins with God and ends with God. Prayer is the reflection of a dependency on God, it is the continual willingness to submit ourselves to His authority in all things.

Don’t Be Anxious – May 5

I’d like to share a few encouraging thoughts on anxiety today. It feels most natural to worry about family, career, health and wealth. If the thought of tomorrow makes you uneasy, rest on these Biblical truths:

1) God made you, knows you, and genuinely cares for you.

…”casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.” Matthew 6: 25-32

2) Prayer and supplication lead to provision. God provides when we earnestly seek Him.

The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:5-6

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33

3) Being anxious accomplishes nothing. This perishing world needs our attention, NOW.

“Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” Matthew 6:27

“Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” Matthew 6:34

4) God promises new mercy and joy each day.

Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” Psalms 30:5

“[God’s mercies] are new every morning.” Lamentations 3:23
